Hypothyroidism is a disease that currently affects over 28 million Americans.
Women are affected more frequently than men by approximately 80%. According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, over half of all cases of thyroid disease remain undetected. Many diagnosed with hypothyroidism are on hormone replacement therapy, yet continue to experience symptoms such as: weight gain, low energy, anxiety, thinning hair, “foggy-headedness”, dry skin, feeling unusually cold, headaches, or depression. The thyroid gland is very important in regulating our metabolism, and allowing our cells to have the energy they need to be healthy!
Thyroiditis, which simply means the thyroid gland itself has become inflamed, has many causes. The most common cause is a disease known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which was discovered by Dr. Hakaru Hashimoto, a Japanese doctor in 1912. The Hashimoto’s form of hypothyroidism is the most common form, at over 90%! It is caused by immune system imbalance. Antibodies form, and white blood cells attack and damage the thyroid. This condition is an autoimmune disease, and is triggered by a combination of environmental exposures and genetics.
Acupuncture, Nutrition, and Hypothyroidism
Most Americans know that acupuncture is very good at treating pain, but it is also excellent at treating the symptoms associated with organ dysfunction, and in particular hypothyroidism. Acupuncture regulates the immune system, which is absolutely essential for effective thyroid management. Acupuncture also lowers the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that contribute to autoimmune hypothyroidism.

As an acupuncturist who has treated people with hypothyroidism for 10 years, I will be the first to tell you that most people on thyroid medication need to remain on their medication as prescribed! The body needs the hormones that it is not properly producing. As practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we will help you diagnose the root cause of your thyroid dysfunction. If you are getting some support for your hypothyroidism but still suffer symptoms acupuncture and informed nutritional and lifestyle guidance is a choice with a proven record. Call today, you’re worth it!
What to expect
Hypothyroidism is a complicated disease. Since the symptoms to not appear overnight, expect that it will take some time to regain your health. We use a combination of acupuncture, auricular (ear) acupuncture, Chinese herbs, nutritional supplements, and dietary guidance. Progress may be checked with laboratory blood work.
Credentials and Advanced Thyroid Training
I became aware that too many women are dealing with the debilitating effects of hypothyroidism despite proper hormone replacement therapy in 2009. Dr. Datis Kharrazian, a well-known chiropractor, neuroscientist, and immunologist educates Doctor’s of natural medicine in treating people with thyroid dysfunction. After attending continuing education seminars by Apex Energetics and using the techniques taught by Dr. Kharrazian, I find patients achieve a much higher quality of life when informed nutrition and acupuncture are combined with drug therapy. In addition to receiving education from the talented staff of Apex Energetics, I have also studied immune system balance with the esteemed Michael Young, Licensed Acupuncturist of Longmont, Colorado, and Kiiko Matsumoto a very well respected acupuncturist from Japan.
