Detoxify in the Fall And Winter!
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR?
The cooler mornings and evenings are letting us know that fall and winter are upon us. This is traditionally a time for positive life transformations. In the plant kingdom, this is the time that adult plants “let go” of their seedsin hopes of providing new life for the coming spring. Echoing the wisdom of the ancient acupuncturists, fall is the best time of the year to
“let go of things, people, and patterns which no longer serve our highest purpose.”
As an example, if there is someone in your life who drains you of your energy and never seems to be there when YOU are in need, this might be a good time to have a conversation with that person and move on with your life. The fall and winter are a great time to detoxify your body with acupuncture, nutrition, and herbal medicine. Here is a good recipe that is appropriate for the Season:
Golden Rice Pilaf:
2 cups short grain brown rice
4 cups vegetable broth or chicken broth
Add some sea salt
1 teaspoon turmeric
½ cup diced red or yellow pepper
1 teaspoon rice or apple cider vinegar
1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, green beans, squash)
½ cup shelled pumpkin seeds
1 tablespoon tamari soy sauce
¼ cup black olives, pitted and sliced thinly for garnish
- Rinse and drain the rice. Heat a thick-bottomed pot. Dry-roast the rice quickly, stirring until slightly golden.
- Pour broth into the pot. Add salt, turmeric, peppers, vinegar, and vegetables. Simmer until the rice is cooked (approximately 50 minutes)
- Dry roast pumpkin seeds
- Add pumpkin seeds and olives
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
½ cup fresh ground tahini
¼ cup vinegar
½ cup water
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoon sea salt
